New Zealand Southern Hikes Itinerary


Day 1
Arrive to Queenstown and make your way to your accommodation. The rest of the day is free for your leisure. Tonight,
we meet as a group for the first time in the lodge reception area and set off for our first group dinner.

Meals: Welcome Dinner
Overnight: Pinewood Lodge (1 & 2 bedroom apartments)

Day 2
QUEENSTOWN – LAKE ALTA – TE ANU (Hike – 10km / 4 hours)

Hike to Lake Alta
After breakfast at our accommodation we leave the bustle behind and drive south along the eastern shore of Lake Wakatipu. We then head up the spectacular Remarkables ski field road. From the ski field car park we will climb to the picturesque Lake Alta. We will make our way through alpine wetlands and up to the glacier cirque. This half-day hike will provide plenty of breath-taking photo opportunities. Lake Alta is also the site of many movies, including scenes from the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. There will also be a great photo opportunity as we drive back down the Remarkables road to capture panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown. After passing through typical New
Zealand farm scenes we arrive to Te Anau.

Day 3
TE ANU – HOLLYFORD TRACK (Hike 7km / 2-3 hours, Helicopter Flight

Hiking the Hollyford Track in spectacular Fiordland National Park
Drive from Te Anau through the majestic Eglington Valley to Milford. In Milford we board the helicopter for spectacular aerial views of Milford Sound, Hollyford Valley and Mt Tutoko as we fly to the remote Martins Bay. On arrival we enjoy lunch in a safari style tent before taking an afternoon walk. On the walk we have the opportunity to see the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin. We also visit a rookery of native New Zealand Fur Seals. These creatures are a marvel to watch as they play in the thunderous West Coast surf before stretching out and sunning themselves on the rocks. We then return to Martins Bay Lodge in a jetboat for a gourmet food platter followed by a delicious dinner.
After dinner sit back and enjoy the this truly wilderness destination as our group has exclusive use of the lodge.

Day 4
HOLLYFORD TRACK – TE ANU (Hike 18km / 6-8 hours, Jet Boat ride

Hiking the Hollyford Track in spectacular Fiordland National Park
We board the jetboat for a scenic transfer up Lake McKerrow to the Hollyford River. From the boat marvel at the mountains as they rise dramatically and embrace the feeling of remoteness that the vast Fiodland National Park commands. When we reach the Pyke River confluence we begin our 18km walk up the Hollyford Valley. We cross Little Homer Saddle before stopping for lunch at Hidden Falls. The track undulates gently through native beech forest and beside tumbling waterfalls. Our specialist Hollyford guide will amaze us with tales of early pioneer explorers. On reaching the Hollyford Track end we then have a relatively short drive back to Te Anau.

Day 5
KEPLER DAY HIKE – WANAKA (Hike 12km / 4-6 hours)

Hiking on the Kepler Track
Today we hike part of the Kepler track, one of the famed ‘Great Walks’ and famed as one of New Zealand’s most rewarding day hikes. We start off with a water taxi trip across the Lake Te Anau before beginning the hike. We then head along the track as it climbs its way to the bush line near Luxmore Hut. Enjoy the expansive views of the Fiordland wilderness and the Te Anau basin. After the descent we catch the water taxi back across the lake to Te Anau and sit back and relax on the drive to Wanaka.

Dinner tonight will be on your own in Wanaka.

Day 6
WANAKA – ROB ROY GLACIER (Hike 10km / 4-5 hours)

Hiking in Aspiring National Park
After breakfast and a short drive we hike up the Matukituki Valley beneath fine peaks before turning towards the glacier. This gorgeous trail then meanders through virgin beech forest emerging into a splendid alpine basin below the bulking mass of the Rob Roy Glacier. Watch water tumble off the glaciers snout as you relax and enjoy lunch. Return to the vehicle by the same route.

Overnight: Altamont Lodge, Wanaka (shared bathrooms)

Day 7
ARROWTOWN – QUEENSTOWN (Hike 4km / 1-2 hours plus optional 2-3 hour loop walk)

Explore historic Arrowtown and surrounds
Enjoy the remarkable drive over the Crown Range from Wanaka. From the summit take a short walk where you will be rewarded with breath-taking views across the Wakatipu Basin and lakes. We then continue the drive into Queenstown – New Zealand’s Adventure Capital via a stop at the historic town of Arrowtown to check out the stunning Autumn colours.

For those keen we can take a walk through Sawpit Gully and enjoyable 2-3 hour loop with a variety of scenery.
Our guide will bid their farewells on arrival back into Queenstown in the late afternoon.

Tracks are generally in good condition
Altitude gains of up to 600m (2000ft) on harder days

6 nights twin share accommodation in a combination of well-appointed apartments, lodges and deluxe motels

The group will be accompanied by a local English speaking guide
